One of the more popular industry formats, and widely supported amongst component vendors, the SFP(small form-factor pluggable transceiver, or Mini-GBIC) is used for both data communication and telecommunication purposes. SFP components support SONET, Fiber Channel and Gigabit Ethernet amongst other communications standards. The SFP interfaces the motherboard of a network device, such as a router or switch, to a networking cable.

SFP+ is the most prevalent socket on 10GE systems, providing strictly optical to electrical conversion. SFP+ does not provide clock and data recovery (which put a burden on the host’s channel equalization.) Developed by the ANSI T11 fiber channel group, SFP+ allows higher port density than XFP and the recycling of existing designs for 24 to 48 ports in a 19” rack width blade because it is physically identical with legacy SFP modules.

GBIC offers a basic hot swappable electrical interface and allows for one gigabit Ethernet ports to support most forms of physical media (including copper to long-wave single-mode optical fiber) at extensive ranges, up to hundreds of kilometres. As a result, GBIC has been adopted as the industry standard gigabit interface converter for transceivers. Most often, GBIC is used with Gigabit Ethernet and fiber channels.

The XFP is designed with future generations of optical transceivers in mind. It is the least established of the MSAs and therefore the most complicated to implement. However, due to its size, it offers higher 10 Gigabit Ethernet port densities and consumes less power than its competitors. The XFP is essentially a small form factor pluggable for 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
